What Are Shingles?

Contact Us Now About Acupuncture for ShinglesShingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a painful, blistered skin rash caused by the chickenpox virus. This virus remains within the skins sensory nerves after someone has suffered from the chickenpox virus and it is revived later in life. The most common time that people will suffer from shingles is after the age of 50, typically because the immune system becomes less effective.

Causes Of Shingles

Shingles can occur when people experience stress in their lives. It can also be caused by medications that decrease the immune systems ability to function properly. After people have had surgery, the incidence of shingles rises. The drugs people are given to fight cancer have also been shown to be the cause of the appearance of shingles.

What Is It Like To Have Shingles?

At the beginning of a shingles outbreak, sufferers begin to experience the sensations of tenderness and burning in their skin along with severe pain. After about three to seven days, a rash will appear, but only on one side of a patients body. This painful rash can appear on the face, the back or stomach, in the scalp or on the thigh, for example. The duration of this pain is usually between one and four weeks when the rash begins to disappear, but it can endure longer than a month. Patients who continue to suffer from pain after four weeks after the rash has disappeared are known to be suffering from post-herpetic neuralgia.

How Are Shingles Treated?

The pain from shingles can last for years, and people do not always find relief in the medications they are prescribed. One answer to this problem is acupuncture. The acupuncture treatment encourages the body to fight the herpes zoster virus on its own by strengthening the immune system. This procedure provides the relief from pain that these patients are looking for. To limit the pain the needles may cause during this procedure, acupuncturists will place them away from the areas that contain the rash such as the neck, the arms and the legs of the patient. The Acupuncture and Nutrition Clinic treats shingles using acupuncture and herbal therapy. The goal of the treatment is to clear the “damp heat” in the body usually along the Liver and/or Gallbladder channels. Depending on location of the shingles outbreak will determine where treatment will be on the body. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the most prescribed treatment for shingles in China and is considered to be the treatment that has the most success in terminating the pain it causes.
