FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR PRACTICE OF ACUPUNCTURE IN HOUSTON TEXAS:

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture is a part of Chinese medicine and involves the use of needles or moxa (artemix vulgaris) for the prevention and treatment of diseases. It was discovered and developed by the Chinese and has been around for several thousand years.

The needles are not simply applied randomly, but applied mostly at specific body points known as acupoints. These acupoints have been identified along many pathways (known as meridians) in and on the body.

WHAT ARE THE MERIDIANS?
Meridians are definite pathways in and on the body through which Qi (chee) or life energy, travels. They are a complex, yet invisible network that transports Qi to every part of the body.

The major pathways connect internal organs and traverse outward to link with the extremities, which lay on the exterior of the body. There are fourteen major energy channels that course through the human body including the head, arms, hands, legs, feet, torso and internal organs.

WHAT IS AN ACUPOINT?
An acupoint is a specific spot on the body where needling can be applied in order to bring about an intended therapeutic effect. When a needle is inserted in that specific spot, functional reactions by certain organs of the body or changes of the viscera will occur.

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
This is a frequently asked question and there is no single universally accepted answer. According to Chinese acupuncture theory, Qi is the key word that explains how and why acupuncture works. Qi or vital force (or life energy) is invisible and immeasurable. This vital force circulates through the meridians to all parts of the body. When there is balanced, free flow of this life energy, there is good health.

However, if there is any blockage or gridlock of the amount, flow or balance of Qi, there will be ill health, pain or a lack of well-being. Acupuncture has the capability of balancing and moving this energy flow so the organs and body systems can work together. This harmony then provides a basis for the body to heal itself and maintain its own good health. Acupuncture Houston Texas can provide you and your family with these proven benefits.

WHAT CONDITIONS ARE TREATABLE WITH ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture Houston Texas treats addictions, allergies, arm & shoulder pain, arthritis, asthma, back pain, bursitis, colds & flu, colitis, constipation, chronic cough, depression, diarrhea, fatigue, fibromyalgia, gastric upsets, headaches, hip pain, immune system deficiency, indigestions, infertility, insomnia, joint pain, knee pain, leg pain, neck pain, nervousness, neuralgia, premenstrual syndrome, sciatica, shingles, shoulder pain, sinus problems, sports injuries, stomach problems, whiplash.

WHAT ARE NEEDLE TREATMENTS LIKE? DO THEY HURT?
Acupuncture needles are very thin, sterilized, disposable needles. They are typically no bigger around than a human hair or piece of thread. They do not hurt as much as medical injections because medical hypodermic needles are stiff, hollow and thick for forcing liquid into a patient’s body. Acupuncture needles are solid, flexible and stainless steel.

When inserted there is a slight pinch that lasts less than a second. There can also be a slight sensation when the needle makes contact with Qi. This energy awareness may cause a slight tingling sensation, but is not considered painful.

WHAT ABOUT HERBAL FORMULAS?
Herbal formulas may or may not be recommended, depending on the patient’s condition, age and number of western drugs the patient is already taking.

Generally, most conditions are improved with the combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine, but the herbal prescriptions are given on a case-by-case basis.

Chinese herbs may make it possible to lower the dosage of western drugs, to reduce their side effects and obtain a better overall effect.

Western drugs may provide emergency relief for serious conditions that will allow long-term application of Chinese herbs the rest of the time.

Acupuncture is compatible with virtually all modern medical techniques.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS TO ACUPUNCTURE?
Most often there are no side effects from acupuncture. However, because energy is being moved in new ways as healing begins, the patient may experience some unfamiliar sensations. Some describe the feeling as a floating experience and/or having a greater sense of calm after the treatment. On occasion there is some slight bruising which can occur but most patients feel relaxed after the treatment from Acupuncture Houston Texas and look forward to their next visit.

HOW LONG DO TREATMENTS TAKE?
Depending on each person’s condition and treatment plan, each treatment averages thirty minutes to an hour. The initial treatment usually lasts longer than the average follow up treatment.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS AND HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO COME?
Because each patient is unique in their health concerns and their response to treatment may vary, the number and frequency of treatments may change from one person to another.

Acupuncture Houston Texas recommends one to three treatments per week for eight to sixteen treatments, although some patients may not need more than one or two treatments to resolve an acute condition.

I would like to know with acupuncture and dealing with an eating disorder, how soon does a person get some relief that they are getting better. My daughter has a eating disorder and takes medicine for depression and anxiety. She is in college and has a lot of stress. In this kind of situation, if she came to your clinic, is there consultation plus acupuncture. How long would the sessions be? What is your fee schedule? How to schedule an appointment?

Also, do you do acupuncture for weight loss? I’ve gone through the change of life and not having hot flashes but I have gained 20 pounds in a year and a half.
